LISA VENTRE HATS
Located on Commercial Street in Provincetown, Massachusetts you can find Lisa Ventre's hat shop filled with her one-of-a-kind designs that are full of interesting pattern, whimsical shapes, and just darn fun. She began making flat patterned fabric hats in 1988 in Boston and 15 years later moved to Cape Cod where she began experimenting with straw braids. This led her to exploring the qualities of toyo hat construction. All of her hats are made by hand in her Provincetown studio, You can visit her studio at lisaventrehats.com.
WHAT INSPIRED HER TO CREATE HATS
After hand stitching a hat for myself and the responses I received from it, I began making patterns and cutting fabric to build more hats to sell. My interests in sculpture and painting ended up combining into hat making.
DID YOU RECEIVE FORMAL TRAINING AS A MILLINER?
No. I just kept making mistakes until I got something that would actually go onto a head! And then obsession comes into play.
WHERE SHE FINDS HER INSPIRATIONS
Ideas for designs can come at any place or time. Some basic shapes I pick up throughout history whether in a painting, photo, or film. But nature has it everywhere you look. Textures and colors come to me a lot from the environment where I am living here on Cape Cod. The sand, the changing sky, and sea. Also the more I play with a particular material the more inspiration I get from it and realize its endless potential.
THE BEST PART OF HER JOB
Experimenting with making.
ABOUT HER STUDIO
I've always made sure I had space to make things and luckily my studio is now in the place I live. These days I mainly work with a natural fiber braid and need to be at the sewing machine to do the actual building.
HER FAVORITE MATERIALS TO WORK WITH
These days, for hat-making, I mainly work with toyo braid. If time and space allowed I would be experimenting with all sorts of materials that would not necessarily be worn as a hat!
